Music Production

We all kinda know what music production is: It’s making music. Right?

Well, it’s a little more involved than that. A music producer does the following things when producing music. Here’s an abbreviated list of what that entails:

  • Budget

  • Project Planning & Management

  • Facilitates Getting the Following for Projects:

    • Studio

    • Engineers (if the producer doesn’t plan on doing the Recording, Mixing, and/or Mastering

    • Equipment / Gear

  • Shape the Sound of the Music

  • Mentors

  • Acts as a second set of ears

  • Acts as tastemaker

  • Helps with song arrangement

My Process

My preferred method is to record as much of the project as live as I can get. This means all musicians playing together in one room. This ensures the capture of the energy of a complete performance. With each overdubbed performance, the energy can be sapped from the overall feel of the song. The only things that I tend to overdub are the vocals (often due to leakage), backing vocals/harmonies, and guitar solos.

During sessions I try to maintain a laidback environment. It is difficult to perform well if the musician isn’t feeling well (mentally, physically). Additionally, we all do this because it is something we LOVE and derive great pleasure from. From time to time I may even offer coaching advice, more often than not, for vocals or some other performance to ensure that you get the best from your hard work.

Prior to accepting any commission for production or engineering I insist on attending two of the artists performances. This serves two purposes:

  1. It familiarizes me to your performance ability. It can often take a band a few songs to really hit their stride during a performance. It isn’t any different in recording situation.

  2. It familiarizes me as to what you sound like during a performance. Often times, it is here where I’ll start having mixing ideas and overall sound ideas.

  3. It allows me to determine if we will be a good fit creatively.

  4. I support local music. I tend to work in an old school fashion when it comes to looking for work. I can’t do that if there aren’t local acts. By participating (via attendance) I create more work for myself.

  5. I can also offer advice on how to squeeze money out of an industry where it can feel like there isn’t any for you.

  6. I like merch, and if it’s cool I’ll buy it. Don’t give it away - I’ll buy it. You worked to create it, and hopefully you could use the money ;)

My attending these performances is not open for debate and I will not make any exceptions.
